Internship Placement:

Teaching Mathematics in the ASDB High School

For the current school year, from August 2003 and until May 2004, I have been working on my internship in teaching within the ASDB High School.  Three courses in high school mathematics are taught, ranging from 8th Grade Math, Algebra-1 and Algebra-2.  Two other courses in web design and computer lab are also taught, as well as a conducting a study hall.

This internship placement has provided extraordinary and invaluable insights into the inner workings and functioning within the classroom environment for the deaf and hard of hearing.  Teaching High School mathematics to deaf and hard of hearing children has proven to be quite a challenge, but I absolutely love the job! Good working relationships have been forged with my cooperating teacher, my 8th Grade Math mentor, and all the other great teachers and staff that work within the high school department.  Starting from “scratch” and without previous preparation or experience, I have learned the importance of establishing a good performance tracking system to track student grades, address behavioral issues, and maintain parent contacts.

Two semesters of classroom internship experience have afforded a mere glimpse into the teaching career upon which I am embarking.  As I continue to hone and refine my teaching skills, I look forward to a satisfying and successful teaching career.
